COURAGEOUS BOOK CLUB: BORN A CRIME (VIRTUAL)

After Trevor Noah joins us live for a very special edition of Courageous Conversations, join host Zina Jacque for a virtual gathering to discuss Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood, Trevor’s brilliant bestselling memoir about coming of age during the twilight of apartheid.

Winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor and an NAACP Image Award, and named one of the best books of the year by The New York Time, USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle, NPR, Esquire, Newsday, and Booklist, Born a Crime is Trevor’s remarkable story of growing up in South Africa with a black South African mother and a white European father at a time when it was against the law for a mixed-race child to exist. His stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother's unconventional, unconditional love.

Join Courageous Conversations for an interactive practice session with one of our favorite bridge-builders and teachers Jenan Mohajir, Senior Director of Special Projects for Interfaith America. This session is a follow-up to our popular 2020 session, Confronting Prejudice, also led by Jenan. Hosted by Rev. Dr. Zina Jacque and Jessica Green at Barrington's White House.

AN AMERICAN CULINARY JOURNEY: FROM SOUTHERN ROOTS TO FUSION FLAVORS

During Black History Month, we celebrate the many ways Black culture has shaped American culture and influenced the world — from food to music, science and literature. For this special edition of Courageous Conversations, we dine with special guest Chef Christian “Lucke” Bell from Atlanta who will take us on his personal journey in developing a style of cooking that melds his southern roots and global influence.

Chef Lucke brings a passion for food that was instilled in him at a young age by his parents and maternal grandmother, and influenced by his upbringing in what he describes as a “cultural melting pot” on Chicago’s northside, where families came from different places around the world. This fed Chef Lucke’s curiosity for cooking and led him to hone his own cooking style by fusing different flavors, textures, and food traditions with his own unique spin.

  • Tickets: $75 per guest, includes 4-course dinner & dialogue

  • Hosted by Rev. Dr. Zina Jacque & Jessica Green

Presented by Courageous Community, which gathers monthly at Barrington’s White House to explore how to foster greater inclusion and belonging.
